I would like to introduce you to S.E. Owie. He is a master carver from Benin City, Nigeria. In his own words, “I was born into craft and sculpturing, I inherit it from my Father.” Indeed, his forefathers were great carvers for generations, some of their works are now in museums in London where the “colonial masters” took the finest of brass and wood work from Benin City in the 18th century.
Mr. Owie is inspired by all things around him and is subject to strokes of inspiration. His work is heavily influenced by the late Felix Idubor – one of Nigeria’s great artists, and with whom he collaborated on the pillar in the national theatre in Lagos.
